The Essence of Light
and Heart Scenes

There is a kind of light that one wants to gaze at endlessly; there is a kind of light that instantly moves the soul; there is a kind of light that evokes a feeling of a distant sound. Beginning from natural light, and moving through the eras of candles, paper-covered lanterns, light bulbs, and modern LED, light has undergone a variety of changes through encounters with new technologies and materials. In particular, the exquisite nuances of light and the contrasts created between “light and shade” can even transform the quality of spaces. This is indicative of just how much light is intrinsically linked to the images we hold in our minds.

At KAI, following our presentations of KAI-SOU, KAI-SOU iori, and KAI-SEKI, we have chosen light as the theme to conclude our KAI-SOU series with, and named it “KAI-KOU”. Our decision was inspired by the presence of the unique lighting designer Ms. Harumi Fujimoto (year of birth a secret – 2018), who thoroughly understood the nature of light and dyed all kinds of spaces by utilizing “shades of light” and “shades of darkness”. As a “light adventurer” who continued to pursue light and dark based on her unique world view, she was able to produce the most unexpected “coincidences” with light. Lighting designer Ingo Maurer (1932-2019), who lived during the same period as Ms. Harumi Fujimoto and was called the “magician of light” for his ability to manipulate light by using the latest technologies, described the beauty of light as follows in a magazine interview: “Through making light, I believe one can impart a feeling of happiness to people. Conversely, depending on the way that the light is made, one can also impart unpleasant feelings. Nothing can appeal to the emotions through design and form like light.” KAI-KOU started together with the teachings of these pioneers of light.

Light and Colors Connecting
Structure and Imagination

KAI-KOU is a challenging initiative that aims in a good sense to smash the combination of world views that have so far been embodied from KAI-SOU through KAI-SEKI. In addition to utilizing synthetic light to modify the conventional appeal, we have considered ways of using light to propose a new aspect in the KAI-SOU series. Also, we have explored ways of deepening appreciation for spaces through presenting “selected lights” that do not impinge on the imagination of viewers. We held repeated dialogues with light specialist Hisashi Harada and Daisuke Matsumoto , who helped create KAI-KOU.

These two figures describe their initial impressions of KAI-KOU as follows: “As a vessel for working with light, this was the smallest we had ever experienced and was not suited to illumination. Moreover, the vessel had a spatial density that far exceeded its size. When a space is authentic, there is no need for light rendering. For us, as light designers, the challenge presented by KAI-KOU was totally uncharted territory. We sensed that something we had never witnessed before was about to happen.” They continue to describe the experimental process by which they created the selected KAI-KOU scenes. “First of all, we confronted the architectural structure of KAI-SOU iori. On that, we superimposed a series of lights and colors, for example, punky light, natural light, scandalous light, dusky light, and light that brings out jet black darkness. At such times, what kind of creative wings spread in your heart? We gathered such emotional landscapes one at a time and had a great sense of light playing within the contrast of architectural structure and aesthetic imagination.” KAI-KOU lets you see numerous scenes that have been made upon conducting such diverse experiments with light.

Spatial Building Method
of “Kumiawase” (Combination)

KAI views spaces (also including architectural structures) as if they were “human bodies”. When people see, hear, eat or touch external things, their bodies feel something and they either desire more or reject the said things, and a similar thing happens with spaces. We say this in the sense that such a view helps to enhance spaces. Moreover, by intrinsically linking architecture to architecture; interior decorations to interior decorations, and events to events, we feel that hard aspects influence the soft, and vice versa, and this allows KAI to discover value by creating changes in actual spaces.

Starting from the elaborately designed KAI-SOU shelves made by applying the technique of “Tsugite-Shiguchi” (beam-pillar joint) to modern materials, in KAI-SOU iori, we employed the same technique to create a new style of teahouse; and then we called on KAI-SEKI to transform the entire teahouse into a mineral universe with landscapes spanning eons. Now, with KAI-KOU, we have created an experience that imparts such a pleasant sensory impact that one forgets the foregoing processes. When people are enveloped in light that is infused with the creator’s intentions, they sometimes close their eyes to get a clear picture of that image, however, KAI-KOU lets you also enjoy scenes when all five senses have been concealed.
